The Royal Engineers 64 Headquarters Squadron, are currently based in Lashkar Gah in the Helmand Province of Southern Afghanistan they are involved in projects to improve the local infrastructure after generations of conflict within Afghanistan. They contacted us to say that they are organising a triathlon to
raise funds for Georgie's Fund. They plan to run, cycle and row 6230km!!! This is the distance from Lashkar Gah in Afghanistan to their home base of Hameln in Germany.

There are 30 soldiers split into 3 teams of 10 (chosen randomly) and each team will complete the entire distance of 6230 km between them. That works out at an average of 623 km each. They intend to
complete this task by the end of March 07 as they are there until April 07. They intend to start when all the guys are there which will mean they will have about 6 months to complete the task... easy you
might think! An average of 3.5 km a day would be simple enough but when they are out on operations for days on end and putting in long working days as a matter of routine they expect that daily average
to triple or more!! The whole thing is made worse by the restrictions on equipment and space that they have there. The camp is small and basic and the tempratures are often over 50 degrees centigrade!
The Guys are starting the marathon on 1st October and will need lots of support! It is a really busy time for them out there at the moment, without doing a triathlon too!

UPDATE 7TH OCTOBER - We have just received some photos of the guys in action. (They have limited bandwidth out there so the quality of the pictures they can send to us is restricted.) We are getting lots of messages of support coming through, keep sending them and we will add them all to our Message Board.
UPDATE 9TH OCTOBER - One of the teams has completed just over 700km so far but one of the rules is that a maximum of 50% of the distance can be cycling... They'll soon slow down when they have to get on a rower...
UPDATE 15TH OCTOBER - Here are a couple of pictures of the guys wearing thier wristbands.

UPDATE 23RD OCTOBER - Richard has sent us an update of their progres by way of a chart of their progress so far.

UPDATE 20TH NOVEMBER - Just to let you know that the money raised from this event will be going towards purchasing a DASH Multiparemeter Monitor for Ward 38 at The Queen's Medical Centre which is where little Samantha Hughes is fighting her battle against Neuroblastoma. The monitor will be used to monitor various elements of children's health such as blood pressure, temperature etc. and is a vital piece of equipment. It costs around £3,600.
