Cancer charity's first-year boom
Benjamin Leach
A charity founded by the mother of a child who died from a rare form of cancer has raised over £34,000 in its first year.
Georgie's Fund was set up in February 2004 after the death of eight-year-old George Hayhoe from the rare childhood cancer, neuroblastoma.
Hours before he died Georgie was taken to see his EastEnders heroes. He met Shane Richie, Michelle Ryan and Chris Parker from the soap but died the folowing morning.
The meeting was organised by Max Clifford, who lives in Weybridge and has been supportive of the fund.
Tania Hayhoe founded the charity in Georgie's name to raise as much money as possible to research into a cure and new treatments for neuroblastoma.
There is no government-funded research into the disease, so Tania along with five other trustees, decided to set up her own charity based in Addlestone.

All of the trustees work part or full-time. Three live in Addlestone and the other three live in Windlesham.
Sally Barrett, one of the trustees, works full time in IT and said: "It is time consuming and becoming more so as we grow in popularity but it is extremley satisfying
and we are all totally committed."
Sally said the charity was the result of a lot of hard work by everyone involved.
At the moment it's really busy. We've got a lot of things going on. We're only able to get so much done because we have put so much effort in.
We try to get out as much as possible so more and more people know about us."
And the charity is preparing to announce a new patron although they will not yet reveal who.
In it's first financial year the charity raised £34,000. Since then it has raised a further £10,000.

Daniel wins battle of the bands
South African golfer Ernie Els probably doesn't have many Elmbridge links but if you look closely enough there is one.
Since the start of December, Els has been wearing a wristband goven to him by local charity Georgie's Fund at all major competitions.
Daniel Barrett, son of a trustee to the charity, gave Els a Georgie's Fund leaflet and wristband when asking for an autograph.
Els was moved by Daniel's story of how and why the charity was set up but Daniel's mother, Sally, said: "We didn't expect Ernie to wear our band but were thrilled
when he began wearing it."
Georgie's Fund based in Addlestone, was set up in February 2004 after the death of eight year old George Hayhoe from the rare childhood cancer, Neuroblastoma.
