Well yesterday was the big day of the bike ride a huge thanks to Germaine and Neil for organising such a great event. Thank you also to Installation Technology for sponsoring the day. The day went really well. The weather was great and I hope everyone who took part enjoyed it. I am pleased to say there were no casualties and only a couple of punctures which helped to make the day great. Everybody made it to the final pub in one piece and it was wonderful for us to be part of the day. After discussion with Germaine regarding the sponsorship it has been estimated that it is going to be possible to purchase two hearing test machines AND supply the funding needed to soundproof the room used. Which is absolutley fantastic!

A very big thank-you to Installation Technology for sponsoring the day and supplying the t-shirts. A very big thank-you also to Bisley Office Furniture for collecting all our bikes from Shoreham and bringing them back to Guildford. Our last but one big thank-you is to Davina for being our super marshall for the day, checking us in at every checkpoint, supplying us with water, biscuits and fizzy sweets!

Finally our last big thank you is to all those who took part, we are really grateful to you all for supporting Georgies Fund. We never cease to be amazed at the generosity of our supporters.

The Route

Stage 1: St. Martha's Hill - Bramley - Run Common 10.5km (6.5 miles)

St. Martha's Hill takes it's name from the original Norman Parish Church built on this site. It stands 166 metres above Guildford and is the starting point of this stage.

Stage 2: Run Common - Cranleigh - Baynards - Rudgwick 10.8km (6.7 miles)

The last train ran through Baynards Staion on the 14th June 1965. The old railway lines are home for a wealth of wildlife, birds, butterflies and wild flowers.

Stage 3: Rudgwick - Slinfold - Christ's Hospital - Southwater 12km (7.5 miles)

On this stage you will come to the Bax Castle Pub where you will stop for some well earned refreshment! The former Rudwick Railway Station has now been replaced with the medical centre.

Stage 4: Southwater - West Grinstead - Partridge Green - Henfield 11.4km (7.1 miles)

Southwater Country Park was built on a former brickworks. The Quarry, which is a conservation area, is a home to kingfishers, nightingales and lizards amongst other wildlife.

Stage 5: Henfield - Steyning - Bramber 7.7km (4.8 miles)

Here the trail rolls out onto the flood plains of the river Adur, with some lovely views of the South Downs. The last passenger train left Steyning in 1966 carrying a wreath on it's buffers reading; "In loving memory of the faithful"!

Stage 6: Bramber - Botolphs - Shoreham-by-Sea 6.6km (4.1 miles)

The smell of the sea is in the air now! In Saxon times the estuary was navigable as far as Steyning, where there was a busy port and ship building industry. During the 14th century the river began to silt, the port moved south to Botolphs and then Shoreham.

We were raising money from this project to purchase an echocardiogram for the Royal Marsden's Children's cancer ward. Due to the superb efforts of BAA we reached the target much sooner than anticipated, which is absolutley fantastic! Because of this we have been frantically chasing the Marsden to fund an alternative project. They have come up with a great one although we don't have the full details as yet. Basically the chemotherapy the children receive means that their hearing can be damaged as a result so they need to have their hearing regularly checked. The Marsden's current hearing test machine is over twenty years old and useless! The children have to be transported to other hospitals currently to have their hearing tested.

We would like to purchase a portable hearing test machine to enable the children to be tested without being ferried to various locations! Our George was one of the children ferried around for a hearing test. I am sure you will agree this a worthy project and we really appreciate all your efforts so far.
