PROUD: Tania with Jack (left) and George, after she took part in the 10km London Jubilee Road Race in 2002
"...A family is organising a community balloon race to celebrate what would have been the ninth birthday of their son, who died from cancer earlier this year.
Brave George Hayhoe, of Garden Close, Addlestone, lost his battle against the rare, aggressive cancer Neuroblastoma on January 21.
Now his mum Tania, 37, dad Peter, 44, and 14-year-old brother, Jack have invited pupils and adults to join them in,
letting the balloons go free at George's former school, darley Dene County Infants, in Garfield Road Addlestone at 3.45pm next
Wednesday.
Mrs Hayhoe, a teaching assistant at the school, said the commemoration would also be a big thank you to the community which,
over the years, has given so generously to support the family, including a trip to Eurodisney in 1999.
She said: "As a family, we have been overwhelmed by the love and support of friends and our local community. George touched so many
in his short life and I just wanted to do something special to mark his birthday."
Pupils from a number of schools, as well as nurses and carers, have been invited to the balloon race, but Mrs Hayhoe said anyone
was welcome.
George was diagnosed with the disease in 1999. It affects only around 80 to 100 children a year in Britain, with long-term survival rates of just one in five.
At first it was thought he had won his battle, but the cancer returned in 2003 and he died a year later at children's hospice Christopher's in Guildford.
Townends estate agents, in Addlestone has donated 200 balloons and offered a £25 WH Smith voucher to whoever returns a balloon from the furthest distance.
The family is still keenly involved in fundraising to help research into the cancer and is organising a number of events during the summer.
