The Abbey Rangers tournament took place this year on the 12th and 13th July, this was the first tournament since Abbey's extensive refurbishment, the club was re-opened last month by Sir Trevor Brooking OBE.
The new clubhouse and facilities were very impressive and a far cry from their previous facilities! Abbey Rangers
is one of the biggest amateur clubs in the South east of England. Despite all the excitement of the new facilities it was quite cold and overcast but the rain thankfully mainly held off.
The georgie's Fund Challenge Cup is for under sixes the teams consisted of 5 and 6 year olds and for many of them it was their first experience of a proper match. We were really surprised at the
quality of their play. Usually at their age you expect them all to follow the ball around the pitch but these boys and girls mostly kept their position on the pitch. They really were a pleasure to watch. This year
for the 3rd year in a row Woking Cougars retained the Georgie's Fund Cup by winning 3-1 it was a great match.
This year was very special because we had George Dewhurst to present the medals to the players. George was our Georgie's best friend and his fellow team mate at Abbey Rangers and we were so thrilled that he agreed to present the prizes. George himself was playing in the main
tournament later that afternoon.
A HUGE thank-you also to Jason Lockwood (Chairman) and Graham Keable (Club Secretary) for making us so welcome and for their continued support. Also thanks to Rob for organising such a huge tournament and to all the helpers and parents that helped to make it so successful. We can't wait till next year...
